5 Things To Know Before Becoming an Exchange Student

When thinking about becoming an exchange student it is important to reevaluate the reasons.
The reasons should be clear and should not be a way for one to escape reality. Think carefully about this. Life if not going to take a 180 shift, while you are away. Your thoughts about certain topics are going to change, but things around you will most commonly not change a bit.

But there are important things to know before you decide to become an exchange student:

  1. You will most likely encounter a different culture
This is very normal, and the only way to deal with is to try to have a talk about it. Once you are with your hostfamily and have gotten to know them, you can have a chat about what it is like growing up and living in the country. Then you can come with informations about how it is to live in your own country. Make sure that this conversations will be as unbiased as possible, if not, it might give the impression that you do not like the family and their culture.
  2. A new language will easily be learned
Do not worry if you are going to a country where you have no prior experience with the language, once you live and breathe the words you will most likely become fluent. Many exchange programs offer initial courses in the language to help give you a head start. Many students have experienced that learning a foreign language when you live with it is not as tough as it seems.
  3. You become a part of a family
Whether you like it or not your hostfamily will mean a lot to you. They are the ones who are able to hep you with the every day things, but they are also there to serve as family for you when you are away from your own. Let them know that you are thankful for their decision, and don't be afraid to get personal with them, this is the only way you will become closer.
  4. Your beliefs and views will be challenged
It is natural for you to feel as if you can suddenly see everything from a new perspective. Peers in other countries will inevitably grow up with different beliefs and views, and as you are in a foreign country you will be exposed to the differences. Don't be afraid to be challenged, as it will only help you learn about yourself as well as others.
  5. You will mos likekly not have as much contact with friends at home as you thought
While on exchange it is important to focus on the preset and where you are, keeping in touch with friends and family is important but it should not be of your biggest concern. People from home should respect that you are on a huge adventure, and you should enjoy every single part of it, you will miss it once you are back. Therefore, do not spend all your time on social network with your old friends, but try to experience as much as you can with your new family.

I hope this was helpful to people who are considering becoming exchange students, and also to the ones who are already on exchange.
I hope you are having the time of your life! Do not forget to enjoy every moment of it.
